Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
