The Secret to an Ideal Nap: When, Where and for How Long?

Hear enough self-improvement podcasters, and you'll be easy to convince yourself that a nap is a powerful tool: rather than a band-aid following a bad night’s sleep, but a route towards a better memory, improved mood and possibly a faster 5k run time. Premier League soccer players are all at it – along with musicians, mixed martial artists & high-profile executives. But if you don't have a room for napping or employment that permits regular snoozing, is it *truly* sufficient advantages to a burst of shut-eye to justify the kerfuffle? Does there exist a dependable method to nod off promptly? Furthermore, can you honestly promise you will get up feeling better, not worse?

Identifying The Nap Motivation

“There are three primary motivations for daytime sleep for many people,” says a professor of circadian rhythm researcher. “One is termed recovery napping, essentially the action you take following poor sleep the previous night. The second is prophylactic napping, when you are anticipating insufficient sleep in the future, for example during overnight shifts. Finally, there's “hedonic napping”, which basically boils down to desire: there is a moment to nap in the daytime, and it's pleasant to indulge.”

The primary task to undertake, so, is to examine your nap motivation. “Daytime sleep can be really helpful when night sleeping is disturbed because of factors outside your control – such as, when you are caring for an infant, or you’re recovering after being ill or strenuous activity,” says a sleep specialist. “But if you’re napping since your nighttime sleep seems unreliable or broken, that is frequently an indicator your body's sleep pressure is not at the level it should be. Under those circumstances, naps can become a contributing factor, instead of the fix. Employ naps as a short-term solution to address immediate needs – the focus must always be a solid and consistent overnight rest.”

The Perfect Nap Duration

This means that naps shouldn’t be long enough to interfere with your overnight rest, and preferably are not recommended post-3 p.m. (based on what time you retire overnight). How long is sensible? Recommendations vary. From the most-cited studies about napping, space agency scientists noted that crew members had improvements of over 50% in vigilance plus a 34% rise in cognitive performance post a 26-minute snooze (technically, this counted an initial six-minute falling asleep phase). “I’d suggest setting an alarm for 20-30 minutes – most people fall asleep quickly,” explains a sleep expert. “There’s a lot of recommendations about the ideal number of minutes, but that tends to cause people to feel more stressed above all – and the most counterproductive thing you can do when attempting to fall asleep is to stress over it.”

If you’re going to sleep for longer, avoid the period between 45 and 60 minutes that induces that sluggish feeling, that disoriented sensation when you awaken. “The science indicates it is preferable to opt for an extended nap lasting 60-90 minutes compared to a medium-length nap,” notes the expert. “Three-quarters of an hour is sufficient to plunge you into a deep sleep stage and it is more probable to feel groggy when you get up – however, if you extend it a little longer to an hour or 90 minutes, you will probably to finish of a sleep cycle and should get up feeling more refreshed. However, if you're dozing for 90 minutes, it will affect how you sleep in the evening.”

Creating the Perfect Snooze Setting

As for exact methodologies, suggestions are diverse. A few professionals recommend adopting comparable habits you’d use to foster restful sleep: a silent space, a cozy bed and as much darkness as is feasible. Some advise that you should simply nap in a chair in the existing light is present – to avoid sleep inertia and to preserve your bedroom as the place your mind associates with proper sleep. “Sleep is notoriously difficult to command,” says a sleep coach. “Without any sleepiness, it is tougher to lie down and basically instruct yourself to nod off. There must be a natural inclination there to start the process in the first place. Personally, I can often snooze in full light and awaken on my own without an alarm, however, what assists a lot of people is to look for a time that they’re naturally somewhat sleepy and then simply allow sleep to come.”

Experimentation is key, and when options are scarce – for instance, if attempting to squeeze in 40 winks while traveling or at the office – there’s nothing wrong with bringing some accessories. “In my work with professional sportspeople, I advise that they not rely on their own bed for naps, because they’re going to have|they will
